Crowe
A Little Summer Fare
Friday, June 18th, 2010 | From the Keeper's Desk | 1 Comment
It was not even the end of May before I realized my personal calender was filled practically every week with some excursion or another during June. For some reason, the stars aligned to give everyone the idea that the weekend of June 25/26 was the perfect weekend for their activity and so more ‘no’s’ were said than not to all the invitations we had. Despite all that, two stories have managed to come our way to post:
A short story in our Single Character section written by Jackie about a Terry Thorne returning home with a small bundle he bought on a whim, a leather-covered book with empty pages…at least the pages and his life was empty until he wrote in it. Please venture into a sweet and charming “What You Wish For.”
The second story is the first installment based on the Twitter Role Playing game that went on for several months between various characters, most notably between Capt. Jack Aubrey and a new lady, Madeleine Musette. Maddy knows all about the secret of Crowe’s Point - has lurked there for sometime but has never gained enough courage to take that one final step into the universe…until she read and saw Jack. Now she hovers at a social function held on the deck of the Surprise, and Maddy finds herself under the captain’s influence…or rather, the influence of his special stock of wine. Please visit “We Have The Weather Gods.”
As always, if you wish to convey your thoughts to the authors of the pieces, write us and let us know!

PIC FEST & More

Here’s another little update for you - Our latest series of installments involve one huge voluminous story written by the originators of The Gaslight Hotel and Crowe’s Point, and chapters 8 & 9 will prove how a simple (and fun) a little writing challenge can morph into a wonderful exploration of character and plot. All based on pictures, no less! Do check out our latest installment - both good and bad things happen to Tina and John, and Colin craves to know if things will ever be the same for him and Michelle. WARNING: adult situations, rated R.
Along with our update, we’d like to introduce you to some new arrivals to the Crowe fandom itself - one involves a blog dedicated with love to the actor himself and his various characters. Golden Girl presents “Russell Cove” for the purpose of discussing our favorite characters and latest news of our Favorite Man. She’s a brand new fan and we always love to welcome newcomers to the fandom. She has excellent taste in actors and men, doesn’t she, ladies?
If you’re wanting to know where she got her beautiful graphics, check out Lithium Designs.
We’ve also added their blogs as well as new friends to our Favorite Links list, so be sure to check them all out! Among them are our friends Vicki Lyn (”its the way you ride the trail that counts”) and Ithildin with her own fanfiction website, Darkwood, featuring stories centered in Forever Knight and Highlander.
And finally, we’ve been honored with new additions to our Twitter Role Playing family - newcomers to the fandom @nyteraider and Golden Girl have kindly agreed to participate in our little social media game for the Crowe’s Point, the alternate universe for all our favorite Crowe characters. If you’ve been following the RP with @SIDSixPtSeven and @Ava_James, then you will be excited to learn that SID has gone through a reboot…Good Lord, what sort of mesmerizing monster will come out of SID now? And will Ava be able to figure him out (in time)? We can promise you, NOTHING is boring at the Point…
(and a big round of applause for @nyteraider, @Ava_James & GoldenGirl - they’ve already given us a taste of things to come…)
The BEST way you can keep up with all these streams (of consciousness…or lack thereof) is to check out our MixTweet site - this has been a LOVELY answer to our collaboration issues on Twitter, especially in regards to role-playing. It can be hard enough trying to figure out how Twitter works on a general basis - throw in a continual soap opera of conversation and things can rapidly get lost in the chatter. But MixTweet allows us to create groups of the Twitter people we want you to see, and everyone is collected in our Group, The Gaslight Tavern, as well as individual pairings. Some of those pairing include @CaptJackAubrey with @MaddyMusette2 and @MrTerryThorne with @Shaina_Y.
Plus, the really neat thing about MixTweet is, if you want to go back in history, just click the “more” button at the bottom of the page. Its role-play reading made easy!
Working to bring more to you soon!

New Videos, New Twitter
Thursday, September 3rd, 2009 | Website Info | No Comments
Hello!
Pat, of www.rizeandshine.com, has a set of videos that she created while playing around with some software and out of that experimentation came up some thematic compilations of Russell’s movies. Pat has given us permission to link to her videos and so I announce a new page showing our favorites. We hope to continue presenting some of our favorite videos here. If you have any to suggest, let us know! Many thanks to Pat for letting us share her creations!
We’ve also added two new Twitter pairings to our list: Bud White with Emma Jean Camden and Cort with Chloe J Navratil. If you haven’t tried Twitter, this might be a fun way of experimenting with it and getting a feel for how it works. The great thing about all this is that for each pairing there is a page on which both “tweets” can be seen as they appear in the ‘timeline stream’ so you can see the conversation as it occurs. If you havent tried your hand at writing, want to but dont know quite know how to begin, consider using Twitter for a bit of role-playing. This might spark some wonderful ideas! We’re looking for people who would be willing to do either male or female characters.
As for stories, we welcome new ones or additions to old ones. The next update will hopefully include more of the ‘old’ stories from the archives for the Chronicles section of our site.
Best regards,
Sharon
Twitter Streams

Continuing with our efforts to keep you posted on improving and adding to the site, we have added two new pages in connection with our Twitter page: “real-time” feeds of our Role-Playing couples in the Twitterverse. So far, we have only two couples listed: @CaptJackAubrey with @MaddyMusette2 (Maddy’s RP had to be moved to a new account, but the original under @MaddyMusette is still up) and @SIDSixPtSeven with @Ava_James. We have other accounts active at this time, but no story, so if you Twitter or would like to start Twittering, contact me, Sharon, at gaslight@gaslighthotel.net for details. I found out very quickly that Twitter is more than just telling people what you at for breakfast - its a lively way of interacting and sharing information about your interests and concerns…as well as a unique and creative way to role-play your favorite characters! Come join us!
Best,

Gaslight is on Twitter!
A new page has been added, one that will continue to be updated and expanded as content comes available, especially twitter-related applications that will allow you to follow what is going on. Just check out our menu page.
What is Twitter?
Twitter is social media, the newest brightest form of cyber-communications, more than just a place to post your daily activities or oddball links: a thriving presence of role-playing tweeters populate the growing Twitter community and it was something we dove into. We already have a few active Twitter ‘relationships’ going and if you go to our Twitter page, listed in our menu, you will see the accounts we have set up.
Come join us!

Summer Changes - Update
Sunday, August 2nd, 2009 | From the Keeper's Desk | No Comments
Thought we’d forgotten you? Wrong. In fact, we’ve been keeping you in our thoughts rather steadily now for the last few months, even though summer landed pretty fast and hard and early. When I wasn’t taking trips to San Antonio or Galveston, I was driving to Florida and back, or visiting family in the hill country of Texas; and Tina, our Resident Crime Scene Tech, aka “List Mum”, was working Derby and coping with an increase in cases, a workload that continued to rise as June settled in. It has not been until July that both of us have had a chance to really evaluate the website and implement some new things as well as reorganize the old.
So if you click on the link, you will find that the Gaslight Hotel has a New Look: leaner, cleaner…you might even say more austere. Our focus here is on the many stories we have housed and will continue to add to in the months to come.
And there’s lots of good stuff this time around, especially if you’ve been wondering about the ‘history’ of Crowe’s Point. We’ve opened up our archives once more and uploaded several stories, ones that had been long time favorites and even some that haven’t been up in quite some time. These stories are listed in Crowe’s Point Chronicles.
Near Side of the Point - Jack Aubrey’s entrance into the Point as told by Laura. One would think characters like Maximus and Cort would make the transition to Point life easier…well, they’d never met a character like Jack!
Distant Echoes - Maximus meets a new arrival to the Point, a much needed doctor. Will he accept that Anthony is not what, or who, he appears to be?
Sarah Lacey has added new chapters to her story, Programmed For Success – will she and Maximus have time for each other while she works for SID 6.7? (addition begins on p. 9)
The entirety of This Is Your Captain Speaking, by Kazlyn, is now loaded for your enjoyment. Tensions rise as Terry and Kaz discover a connection.
Harry Potter at Crowe’s Point?! Well…not quite, but Sophy has some issues to discuss with a mentor and she does so with magical flare in Heisenberg At The Point.
In conjunction with Distant Echoes, we present the next three stories as a means of getting to know how a non-Crowe character ended up becoming part of the Point Family. Faith, First Date, and Grace are told from the perspective of Stephanie.
God’s Gift is a wonderful little story that was written specifically with Jeff Mitchell in mind.
Crowe’s Point:
Scarlet Meets the Big Bad Wolf receives a new chapter this go around – Hando has been making it clear to Maximus and everyone else how he intends to receive newcomer, Scarlet Moran.
Two stories from our archives: After The Fire, by Roberta, is focused on Cort, while Ayesha, by Athena, centers around Maximus.
A new single story is added to the list, by Tina and Sharon, called Mirror and Mask. A death in the family draws Terry Thorne home to a past long forgotten.
Multiple
We are happy to announce the debut of a new multiple character arc - ‘Viridian Control.’ What is Viridian? The premier story, Inception by Sharon, introduces you to a powerful corporation involved in far more than can be imagined by the citizens of Houston. Inside a picturesque old building in the city’s downtown are secrets known only to a few; one of them is SID 6.7, who rebels against the mercy of Dr. Evan Polidori.
Miscellaneous
Sharon adds to her movie adaptation of the 1999 movie, “The Mummy” starring some of the Crowe’s Point denizens and a very flustered Chloe Navratil. (addition begins on p.14)
We’ve also added a YouTube video featuring lovely scenes of Max Skinner and Fanny, to the tune of “La Vie en Rose,” a delightful video that is sure to have you watching A Good Year again…and again…
Finally, we’d like to make mention of some new links on our site, ones we have re-established old connections with and new ones we have met while tweeting away on Twitter. An Englishman in LA is an artist who designs replica artwork for museums, a lovely man who has created some truly beautiful pieces. Also, Deborah Riley-Magnus is a familiar name to those of us in the Crowe fandom, but an up and coming literary writer who is currently promoting her book, Cold in California.
We have friends at Omega Squadron (hello Kaz!), and Moonlight is a fan fiction source for a variety of interests; and if you REALLY want to know the ins and outs, the depths and heights of the world of fandom, you can’t go wrong entering the wiki of Fan History (beginning of course with a page featuring our favorite actor, Russell Crowe). Many thanks to site administrator, Laura Hale, for her assistance and support!
And we’d like to give a special thanks to fellow Tweeters @deepbluesealove, @katmars, @Emma_Camden, @purplepopple and @jackiesfeet, for all their support and enthusiasm and good will on Twitter. You guys have made Twitter an awesome place to be!
Last but not least, a huge thank you to Jessie, Darrin, Kaspinet, Riley, and Natalie! Be sure to visit their sites and the others listed for beautiful artwork, fantastic forays into imagination, and lots of news and discussion about Russell Crowe. Can May 2010 come soon enough? NO!
One last thing – if you should wish to contact the author of a particular story, perhaps to convey a compliment upon their writing, or want to know how to become part of the Gaslight Tavern Yahoo group, be sure to go to our Contacts page and use the email and links listed there. Feedback is Pure Love to writers and they might be inspired to write more if you encourage them!
Happy reading!

April Showers, May Flowers…and For Some the Never-Ending Winter!
Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 | Uncategorized | No Comments
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, and welcome once more to the Receiving Room, the blog for The Gaslight Hotel, and the place to find the latest announcements regarding the website.
We are glad to see you here! Relax…sign our guest book…and get ready to go on a reading marathon, as we present you with the March/April updates, a little something to help greet the spring, even if there is still snow and frost on the outside! It is our desire to see these stories warm your spirits or give you a well-needed escape in a busy and stressful world.
But before we start, we want to thank all our participants as well as our readers, whether you are a regular visitor or are discovering us for the first time. The Gaslight is not the same without you and it is especially gratifying as the website prepares to celebrate its’ ninth anniversary (in one form or another)!
Let’s get started:
A word about the Gaslight guest book:
Many thanks to those who have contacted us to tell us of issues regarding posting to the guestbook. It has been revamped, but regrettably, the original comments are now gone due to us finding a good deal of SPAM (wait…is anything related to spam considered ‘good’? *g*), which resulted in us having to delete everything, as we were unable to save the ‘real’ comments. We’re so sorry about this happening, but please feel free to check it all out again.
***********
Crowes_Point_Radio, aka “C-P-R”, at Blip.FM is still going strong, with all new songs added as well as old favorites. As a reminder or to those of you hearing about Blip.FM for the first time, here is an explanation from last time along with some new information:
You’re going “Huh? What’s Blip.FM?” It’s a way of building a playlist of your favorite music and Gaslight is now a part of it. We have loaded songs and other music for you to enjoy while you read our stories. Approximately twenty-five songs can be incorporated at a time in the scroll, so we’ll be changing the rotation as regularly as possible, probably every few days.
All you have to do is click on the link to start the rotation, and when one song has ended, manually click the ‘next’ button and you’re on your way again. We’ve also included some little comments we hope are appropriate to the particular song, and many will actually tie into the stories themselves! But the nice thing is that no download of Media Player or QuickTime is necessary!
But that’s not all about our new toy! We have a ‘station’ on Blip.FM which is at http://blip.fm/ and we went ‘LIVE’ on the 13th of January! We are Crowes_Point_Radio or C_P_R for your musical resuscitation! We currently have a playlist of over four hundred (400) songs and nearly two hundred listeners; and it is growing and growing fast: some songs are dedicated to the characters; some tie-in to Gaslight stories; and all are just plain fun. If you have any requests, send them along to us at gaslight@gaslighthotel.net with BLIP ME THIS in the subject line and we’ll try to locate it and create a link. The membership to Blip.FM is FREE and if you like a song that is played, hey, give us props! We do love our props (and they’re building up too which means our playlist is being enjoyed by a number of listeners).
See Blip.FM’s FAQ at: http://blog.blip.fm/faq/ for more information on setting up your FREE account, and look for us under Crowes_Point_Radio at http://blip.fm/Crowes_Point_Radio.
********
We at Gaslight would also like to give mad props to the following websites and their owners - the pictures they have worked hard to generate and offer for our pleasure appear throughout our stories and character pages:
Please do visit their sites and the others listed in our links page!
********
The Gaslight’s Facebook account is very much around and about. You can find us under Gaslight Hotel. We’d love for you to Friend us!

Update coming soon!
Sunday, January 18th, 2009 | From the Keeper's Desk | No Comments
The deadline for submissions for The Gaslight Hotel website will be Friday, January 23rd.
Please send everything to gaslight@gaslighthotel.net so that it goes into the general mailbox and that way we don’t miss anything, and as always, have a beta go over things for you, no matter what you’re sending.
For those of you that sent off things off last time and didn’t get them into our last 2008 edition, we’ll be posting those this time around as well.
If by some chance, you’re working on something, get to the deadline and realize you need another day or two to finish it up, please get in touch and we’ll see what we can do.
And remember, if you ever have any questions, well, you know where to write!
