April Showers, May Flowers…and For Some the Never-Ending Winter!
Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 | Uncategorized | No Comments
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, and welcome once more to the Receiving Room, the blog for The Gaslight Hotel, and the place to find the latest announcements regarding the website.
We are glad to see you here! Relax…sign our guest book…and get ready to go on a reading marathon, as we present you with the March/April updates, a little something to help greet the spring, even if there is still snow and frost on the outside! It is our desire to see these stories warm your spirits or give you a well-needed escape in a busy and stressful world.
But before we start, we want to thank all our participants as well as our readers, whether you are a regular visitor or are discovering us for the first time. The Gaslight is not the same without you and it is especially gratifying as the website prepares to celebrate its’ ninth anniversary (in one form or another)!
Let’s get started:
A word about the Gaslight guest book:
Many thanks to those who have contacted us to tell us of issues regarding posting to the guestbook. It has been revamped, but regrettably, the original comments are now gone due to us finding a good deal of SPAM (wait…is anything related to spam considered ‘good’? *g*), which resulted in us having to delete everything, as we were unable to save the ‘real’ comments. We’re so sorry about this happening, but please feel free to check it all out again.

Crowes_Point_Radio, aka “C-P-R”, at Blip.FM is still going strong, with all new songs added as well as old favorites. As a reminder or to those of you hearing about Blip.FM for the first time, here is an explanation from last time along with some new information:
You’re going “Huh? What’s Blip.FM?” It’s a way of building a playlist of your favorite music and Gaslight is now a part of it. We have loaded songs and other music for you to enjoy while you read our stories. Approximately twenty-five songs can be incorporated at a time in the scroll, so we’ll be changing the rotation as regularly as possible, probably every few days.
All you have to do is click on the link to start the rotation, and when one song has ended, manually click the ‘next’ button and you’re on your way again. We’ve also included some little comments we hope are appropriate to the particular song, and many will actually tie into the stories themselves! But the nice thing is that no download of Media Player or QuickTime is necessary!
But that’s not all about our new toy! We have a ‘station’ on Blip.FM which is at http://blip.fm/ and we went ‘LIVE’ on the 13th of January! We are Crowes_Point_Radio or C_P_R for your musical resuscitation! We currently have a playlist of over four hundred (400) songs and nearly two hundred listeners; and it is growing and growing fast: some songs are dedicated to the characters; some tie-in to Gaslight stories; and all are just plain fun. If you have any requests, send them along to us at gaslight@gaslighthotel.net with BLIP ME THIS in the subject line and we’ll try to locate it and create a link. The membership to Blip.FM is FREE and if you like a song that is played, hey, give us props! We do love our props (and they’re building up too which means our playlist is being enjoyed by a number of listeners).
See Blip.FM’s FAQ at: http://blog.blip.fm/faq/ for more information on setting up your FREE account, and look for us under Crowes_Point_Radio at http://blip.fm/Crowes_Point_Radio.

We at Gaslight would also like to give mad props to the following websites and their owners - the pictures they have worked hard to generate and offer for our pleasure appear throughout our stories and character pages:
Please do visit their sites and the others listed in our links page!

The Gaslight’s Facebook account is very much around and about. You can find us under Gaslight Hotel. We’d love for you to Friend us!

Good afternoon, good evening and good morning to all of our Gaslight members!
We will be announcing the newest edition to The Gaslight Hotel (www.gaslighthotel. net) shortly, so keep watching this space for more, especially as we’re going to be telling you all about…Oh wait…not until the announcement.
So while we continue the planning, we thought that perhaps now would be a good time to make a few other announcements (this is like the fine print, the disclaimers or the FBI warning at the beginning of video rentals), but as this has to do with Gaslight, we’re hoping you’ll take a moment to read over things.
First: it is amazing to see how far The Gaslight Hotel has come since 2000, which was the year it began development under the auspices of Michelle and what she gave, what she encouraged. Her example is what we want to emulate. So many of the decisions that have been made fall back to what was learned from Michelle – the original owner – and like everyone, things will work and some might fail, but you will never know until you see if it will work.
We can’t tell you how much we appreciate everyone’s contributions and we are honored to have such a wonderful group of writers on board, and whenever something new is added, we love it! Why? Because it not only encourages growth for the website, but we can watch another writer measure what they possess, so that they can pleasantly challenge not only others but themselves in pushing further.
I know…you’re waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop, right? LOL
Well, it’s only that we realized after the last update, there were some questions and/or concerns and in order not to detract from the main announcement, we thought it might be best addressed in a separate email so that some things can be made a little clearer. We regret that things were not clarified as much as they could have been (and emails were sent off-list to try to better explain) but it is hoped we can do so now.
Now for those specifically writing Crowe’s Point fiction, we would like to ask something of you, especially as we continue to accept new writers. We know how life is, especially these days when there are so many troubles Outside that of the Gaslight and Crowe’s Point worlds. Sometimes you can’t write…sometimes the inspiration doesn’t come…and sometimes you want to write but writer’s block (or time restraints) has gripped you…or perhaps you haven’t written for the character in a while and you wonder if it’s too late to continue.
Let us know if you are still interested in writing for that connection. Contact us off-list at either gaslight@gaslightho tel.net or at one of our contact emails mentioned on the Gaslight website. We will work with you, but contact us. However, if after six months we don’t hear anything at all, what we will do is move your story or stories over to the Chronicles so that they will still be officially archived.
As far as keeping Crowe’s Point Connections, you will be listed as `inactive’ until we hear something more from you. It does not mean that you can’t start writing for that Crowe character again, but we’ll consider you on `hiatus’ (and it happens as we said we realize – we’ve had it happen too).
One problem we saw is that although we have always said that more than one person can write Crowe’s Point fiction for a particular Crowe incarnation, there was still some confusion as to whether it could be done. This guideline still stands, but we realize that this is not always clear. We’re hoping that if a newer writer or even one of our “old” ones sees that someone is on hiatus or inactive for the time being, they might feel more encouraged to try their hand at a story.
Remember now: THIS is specifically for Crowe’s Point fiction, and as always, if you have concerns, please write us off-list.
In a policy that goes all the way back to the beginning (and that means the very beginning of Gaslight) and something we consider important: we do not like bringing controversy and private arguments onto the main board, no more than we condone openly flaming a fellow member.
Therefore if something was not responded to on the list, it was for this very reason – we will attempt to deal with disagreements on a one-to-one basis off-list. I know from experience that these continual debates can discourage a site owner or List Mum to the point that they are ready to throw up their hands and step away (I have witnessed this at least twice), and this does not help anyone in the end.
It also tends to give a fandom a poor reputation among others `outside’ it, and there is nothing worse than to have a group or interest of yours painted with a negative broad brush. None of us want that and especially not publically on the group so that others are hurt and torn and before you know it, the clash becomes common Internet knowledge: it’s destructive, it’s ugly.
One of the main issues raised after the last update was the moving of a former member’s Point stories to the Chronicles section and why this was done.
First: it has been an unwritten rule going back to the start of Gaslight in 2000 that should someone leave the group, if they were writing Crowe’s Nest or Crowe’s Point fiction and had a connection with one of the Crowe characters, their specific AE would lose that connection, although – if they desired – their stories could be maintained as part of the archives.
We have been fortunate in that it has happened so little; it became one of those things that was nearly forgotten. When – due to creative differences – Beej decided to leave Gaslight without warning us and without instructions as to what to do with her stories, we decided that instead of deleting her work – as many moderators likely would have done – we would move it to the Chronicles for safekeeping.
The Chronicles were created just for this reason, which was what we had attempted to explain in the last update. We wanted a place to put the stories that had first appeared on the old website, and for it to be a place on Gaslight for when a member moved on but in order to preserve their work, it could go there. Looking back, we’re afraid that maybe this was not as clear as we hoped – why the Chronicles were designed – so when questions were raised, we tried to answer them away from the main boards so as not to drag the entire group into the confusion. We apologize again if this added to the uncertainties.
The Gaslight Hotel continues to see a growing readership and an interest from writers who perhaps are trying their hand for the first time. We have been in re-operation now for over a year, and continue to be excited at seeing that those that never thought about Crowe fan fiction before are discovering it, and old fans were happy for the return. We are continuing to expand and to find new ways of bringing the website to you.
May 2009 will be the Gaslight’s official ninth anniversary and we thank you for your support, and once again, if you have any concerns, write us off-list.
Thanks again!
